Welcome

Welcome to Aussie Deaf Kids - online support and resources for parents of hard of hearing and deaf children living in Australia. We now have two discussion groups for parents - PHIDCOZ - is best for parents whose child has a permanent bilateral hearing loss and Aussie Deaf Kids with Unilateral Loss.

The Aussie Deaf Kids web site aims to provide you with relevant and easy-to-access information. The Resource Directory will assist you to find information that is relevant to each stage of your child's life. I welcome any suggestions, articles and news items which I can pass on to parents.

Happy reading

Aussie Deaf Kids is changing...

On 25 September 2007, Aussie Deaf Kids was registered as a not-for-profit company whose vision is to create a leading website for families with a deaf child. This will provide a comprehensive information resource for families within the Australian context.

This website will continue on until this new website comes online in late 2008. This website will, however, remain solely the work of its founder, Ann Porter, and is not the responsibility of the new organisation, Aussie Deaf Kids Limited.

You are not alone...

Most parents feel very isolated when their baby is diagnosed with a hearing loss. But you are not alone. There are parents who have been on the journey before you and know how important it is for families to make contact with other families in a similar situation.

Where can you find other parents? We do not have an established parent mentoring program in Australia but there are a number of options available to parents with a newly diagnosed baby. Speak to the audiologist and tell him/her that you would like to meet parents in your local area. Your Early Intervention Service will be an excellent source for support and friendship with other families. There are Parent Groups in most States and these can be a wealth of information and support for parents with children of all ages. And last, but not least, there are our online groups where many families have found support and good practical information for families living with kids with a hearing loss in a day-to-day situation.

You will learn so much from other parents. They have a vast wealth of experience and knowledge from which you can benefit. And other parents can learn from YOUR unique perspective and experience. You really are not alone...

Aussie Deaf Kids receives no funding and relies on word-of-mouth for families to find out about us. Please feel free to print out the Aussie Deaf Kids flyer and distribute them to families of children with a hearing loss.
